FAQS
How to view MicroDOT marked gear?
Using a UV black light, the resin that sticks dots to items can be identified. A microscope is then required to read the small disc. In common kits available for purchase these items are included.
How do I know if what I found is oyster farming gear?
If the item aligns with those displayed in this app gallery, it's most probably oyster farming gear. See the Gear Gallery in the app.
No one is collecting. What do I do with unclaimed gear?
If the app fails to gain a response within 2 weeks, the items, if collected, can be disposed of through council curbside collection. We generally recommend the gear is left where it is found and reported.
Why report found oyster farming gear?
You should report because often the gear contains live oysters, which, if returned to the water in time, will survive. It also reduces pollution and assists oyster farmers in reusing the item, negating the need to replace it.
Why register my oyster farming gear?
You should register because it allows the app to match you with a finder. At some point, there is a good possibility gear will be lost, and the time invested in registering will be repaid with the return of gear.
How does the system match found gear to farmers?
When someone reports found gear, the system checks two things: the estuary or location and the Tag / ID number, if it's been included. It then compares this information to the gear details registered by oyster farmers.
You’ll get a notification if either the location matches where you’ve registered gear, or the Tag / ID number matches one you've entered. Even if only one of these details lines up, you’ll still be alerted so you can check the report and see if the gear might be yours.
I found Oyster Gear, should I move it?
No, we recommend you report its location where you found it to avoid it being held in your possession and becoming your problem. However, if collected as part of an organised clean-up effort, the gear can be moved to a central location as advised by the clean-up organiser.
Somebody took my oyster gear after I claimed it. How do I report theft?
The app works on principles of honesty to match the details provided by both parties. If you know the farmer who took it, approach them. Should this fail, you have the option of contacting the police.
