Problem: The mangroves and saltmarsh habitat at the bottom of the reserve have struggled to cope with influxes of urban sediments and pollution, sourced mainly from stormwater drains that flow to the creek.
Outcome: This project minimised the amount of material covering the mangrove roots by working upstream at the source of the pollution input. Channel realignment and replanting with native species was coupled with stormwater retention devices designed to remove contaminates before entering the creek.
Before and after photo from the top of the creek. Exotic weeds chocking the creek have been replaced with natives and the channel is once again visible. Another grant has been sourced recently by council to extend the works towards the mangroves.
