Tide to Table – Botany Bay
This project aims to continue to increase the understanding and awareness of the requirements of seafood originating from the Georges River in Sydney and Botany Bay. Seafood commonly valued as a source of food, relies heavily on ecologically endangered communities such as saltmarsh, seagrass and mangroves along with good water quality. Botany Bay is an environment that currently contains more than 90% of the Sydney regions estuarine environments. Fortunately damage to habitat by city encroachment, pollution and unsustainable fishing practices which occurred in the past are now limited as people become aware of the links between how they treat these environments and their seafood dinner plate.
Using seafood as a focus many sections of the community, not necessarily having much in common can work together on projects that further increase the quality and quantity of supportive fish habitat.
The project will develop estuarine monitoring kits and work with river and coastal frontage stakeholders from (Councils, indigenous groups, Bushcare volunteers, periodic detainees, commercial and recreational fishes and divers, the Riverkeeper program and the Georges River Combined Council Group) to increase knowledge and awareness of seafood supportive habitat in the catchment of Botany Bay.
This will be supplemented by supporting restoration effort at 5 key aquatic sites identified as requiring ongoing rehabilitation to maintain and improve seafood supportive ecological communities.
