• There are approximately 9000 commercial fishing licences in Australia. However, due to rising cost of operating a commercial fishing business and increasing fisheries management restrictions, the number of commercial licences is falling.
• Commercial fishers pay a licence fee to access a particular marine resource and pay for the right to own quota units of a particular species. These fees are often substantial as they support management, compliance, and research in that fishery.
